Common Ball Screw Problems

BallScrew is slightly out of tolerance. Runs a little rough. May be slightly bent.
Straighten screw. New balls. New tubes. Make new custom nylon wipers. Re-pack and adjust preload.

ball screw is extremely out of tolerance.

All of the repair procedures for the above, you will need a ballscrew and nut regrind, from minor (dust grind) to major regrind.

Entire ballscrew is beyond economical repair.

You need to have an entire new ballscrew assembly. It may be possible to fix your old ballscrew to keep your machine operating while a new ballscrew is being manufactured.

Check for:
Bent ballScrew.

Alignment of ball screw in relation to slides, gibs, and roller cages.
Alignment of ballscrew in relation to journals.
Alignment of ballscrews in relation to nut housing.
 
 

DO NOT USE GRAPHITE BASED LUBRICANTS.
Improper lubrication can cause poor running and high wear.
Check for:
Proper maintenance of machine lubrication system.
Correct type of lubricant (follow manufacturer's (recommendations).
Remember synthetic lubricants can cause varnish deposits.
Dirty environments can cause poor running and high wear.

Make sure proper wipers are installed and in good working condition.

Consider lubrication system filters or strainers.
Consider installing a bellow type protective cover.
Check coolants for rust and gum content.
 

Be aware of the following potential problems.

Keep units from excessive vibration.
Lubricate and rotate nuts periodically.
Keep screws protected with tubular plastic sheeting.
Hang ball screws vertically to keep them straight.
